Sneak Peak Into Hair Extension Training: Health and Safety

1.3 Health and Safety

Health and safety must be the technician’s top priority. Prior to beginning servicing clients, meet with public health Ontario to make sure the work station is safe and meets provincial standards. The public health website is www.publichealthontario.ca.

Technician Requirements

The hair extensions technician must meet certain requirements:

  • Come to an appointment healthy, clean and ready to work
  • Have a consultation informing the client of any risk involved
  • Provide client pre-care, consent and aftercare sheets

Workplace Requirements

The hair extension technician’s workstation must be safe, clean and sterile. The technician should have:

  • Insurance: The technician should have insurance in case a client falls or becomes injured.
  • Durable equipment: All equipment and tools should be durable, cleaned and sanitary.
  • Washable surfaces: Floors, ceilings, walls and cabinets used for working or storing tools should be clean and sanitary. They must be free of holes, smooth and non-absorbent. Work table, chairs and benches should be made from smooth, non-absorbent material which can be cleaned with a germicidal solution.
  • Proper lighting and ventilation: The work area must be well lit.
  • Handwashing sink: A designated handwashing sink with hot and cold water must be available during hair extension appointments. All sinks should be kept sanitized and free of dirty tools.
  • Proper plumbing: Plumbing should follow local plumbing codes.
  • Hand towels: Single use hand drying towels are required to avoid cross contamination. Avoid using clothe towels.
  • Soap and disinfectant: Plain dispensable soap must be used for routine hand washing. If the soap container needs to be refilled, it must be cleaned, disinfected, rinsed and air dry.
  • If the technician has cuts in the skin, it must be covered with a dressing under a pair of gloves.
